What is a wild woman?

A Simple Question With a Complex Answer

One of my followers asked me on a Q&A response, “What is a wild woman”? It made me think… On one hand “wild woman” suggests undesirable behaviours because the essence of femininity itself is subjected to so many negative cultural perceptions and demands. Seeking to put us into boxes it suggests a completely unbridled woman with a lack of refinement, which often leads to bias of assuming immorality. Yet what wild horse invites the binding reins? Why do we perceive it as a bad thing, to be a free and wild woman?

We shouldn’t fear wild women, I’ll explain why…

It’s crazy how witch hunts and ancient Christian patriarchy still shape stereotypes about the “wild woman” archetype. There is no original sin in Islam blaming women for all time. It’s no secret that ancient Britain had a huge superstition against women who immerse themselves in nature and desire independence. Witch hunts were used to defame a woman’s reputation and image justify her murder and silence her. She threatened the fabric of which society was built. These narratives echo through generations and still shape how people think when “wild women” are mentioned. But who deserves the right to nature and independence more than the worshiper of God? Shouldn’t Muslim women be the most wild of all?

Yes a simple Q&A Instagram question can lead to deep reflection within me. It’s this reflection which caused me to realise that “wild women” are those who don’t live according to harmful and oppressive cultural demands. That’s all. The wild Muslim woman bridles herself only to Allah and filters out the other nonsense. This paves the way for deep spiritual connection, with a whole lot of halal fun.

Even the unbridled horse knows her Lord. Coming to prayer, observing fasts are all part of the natural rhythm of the soul. For anyone who protects their fitrah, they will know that intuition reminds us of a prayer we have neglected to remember. It’s an inner voice. Women’s intuition is at it’s strongest when she connects herself to Her Lord and she is close to nature. Muslim women especially have direct means to cultivate this inner power. Yet, it’s present in women everywhere.

So, what is a wild woman?

She might laugh a bit louder in a coffee shop, run in a field to play with children, lay on grass to soak up the sun, wear bright and patterned clothes, marches against oppression, dances in the moonlight, grows her own food, walk barefoot in the rain, swim in an icy river. None of this is harmful for a believer, if anything it strengthens her by connecting her deeper with nature and sharpens her fitrah. I have the most fun with these women. But society has taught us to remain quiet, poised and project a false image of feminine perfection, based on imported backwards cultural fear. “Women should be hidden and not heard”. Perish the thought, that we should disrupt the fabric of society which seeks to control us! The very same forces who want to ban the niqab.

Wild women are the most fun because they are unbridled in a way that brings expanse into their worlds. When men be wild, no one blinks an eye. For a woman to be wild, she has to be brave. That’s why wild women are the most fun. This is my definition. A woman honours her connection to nature and creative instinct to guide her through life. Committing where she finds love, such as with God.

Therefore, a man should never fear his “wild” woman, for a woman’s true nature aligns where people respect and value her. It aligns with God.

Although she can do it all alone, she commits out of recognition of a partner who sees her value. Who sees her in her full spectrum of colours to facilitate her through life and doesn’t feel intimidated. Healthy communities encourage wild women, never fearing them.

  1. A wild woman is a woman who belongs to herself and God most of all, not to men not to society. Even when she is scared, uncertain, overwhelmed or exhausted, there is still something inside her that keeps moving toward life instead of away from it. She is not wild because she’s destructive or a home wrecker like most people label wild women 🥲 She wild because she is real and she doesn’t give a flip of what others think of her, She doesn’t strive to perfection all the time. She changes, grows, falls apart, rebuilds, learns, questions and transforms, she is the type of woman who keeps a part of herself untouched by fear, even after disappointment (voice of experience 🤣) The type who still imagines more for her future, the one who dreams, the one who is planning something one day but completely changes the next. The type who refuses to become emotionally numb just to survive, a wild woman doesn’t get shaken by the world, she shakes the world…just another perspective from my pov (point of view)…you welcome millennial wild woman ❤️

    1. Powerful! Women have been told to shrink into boxes that make other people feel comfortable. it’s just that there happens to be more boxes to shrink into…
