🌹 David Austin Rose Gardens Review 🌹

Arriving at the David Austin Rose Gardens and Plant Center on a hot sunny day at the end of June was such a treat! We decided to treat Mum to lunch and a rose for her birthday. Mum has a food allergy and I need halal choices. As breakfast is only served until 10:45 and we had to travel a couple of hours to get there, we decided to pop in for lunch.

The Restaurant

The smell of fish and chips filled the air immediately as soon as we arrived. Without delay, we headed straight to the David Austin Rose Gardens and Plant Center restaurant, which is styled like a traditional English tearoom. Despite the crowd, the welcoming and friendly staff seated us within a few short minutes.

When reading the menu, we noticed a couple of warm vegetarian options. However, I decided to go for a fruit scone and an iced latte instead. The latte was small, yet it had a lovely flavor. Meanwhile, Mum ordered a cappuccino, which tasted excellent. The scones were huge and came with clotted cream, jam, and butter. They were fresh; however, they left a slight aftertaste of bicarbonate of soda. As for dessert, Dad ordered a cheesecake, but it was quite small.

All things considered, we enjoyed the experience. The staff didn’t have any issues accommodating allergies or halal needs. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that this was likely because we didn’t order any hot food. According to the menu, they clearly state that they can’t accommodate allergy needs in regards to cross contamination in regards to hot food.

Tea Rooms ⭐️⭐️⭐️ – I have given a 3 star rating due to the size of the latte, the bicarb taste to the scone and lack of options for people with allergies.

Exploring The Gardens and Choosing A Rose

Honestly, I found the David Austin Rose Gardens and Plant Center to be excellent. From the moment you arrive, the experience captures your imagination—even the names of the roses spark creativity. When exploring the rose gardens, you can easily pick out your favourite varieties, making the visit both personal and engaging.

In addition, the air is filled with the rich fragrance of blooming roses, while the distant call of peacocks adds to the charm. These sensory details truly create a multi-sensory experience that’s both relaxing and memorable.

Furthermore, the center provides plenty of inspiration and expert advice on companion planting, rose arrangements, and aftercare. Whether you’re a gardening novice or an enthusiast, the staff and displays offer valuable guidance to help your roses thrive.

The Overall Experience

For anyone who loves roses, nature, tea rooms, or beautiful gardens, visiting the David Austin Rose Gardens and Plant Center is truly worth the journey. Located in the heart of the stunning Shropshire countryside, the center offers a peaceful escape that’s perfect for a relaxing day out.

During our visit, we already began planning to return and explore the nearby walking routes—ideal for a summer evening stroll. One charming detail I noticed was how many ladies picked a rose for themselves and then sat together enjoying tea with their chosen blooms before heading home. This simple ritual added a heartwarming touch to the experience.

Overall, the atmosphere felt calm, welcoming, and serene—making it a perfect destination for garden lovers and tea room enthusiasts alike.

Staff – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Everyone was super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Service with a smile.

What we chose – Mum chose The Princess Alexandrea of Kent for its fragrance and traditional luxurious full pink flowers. I chose The Lady of Shalott for it’s sunset-like multicoloured flowers and tea fragrance.

There is plenty to do for an afternoon out with halal options for food and drink. The centre is accessible, however possibly boring for young children, who would need to be supervised. I found The David Austin Centre to be friendly, welcoming and halal friendly.

Halal Rating – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Visitor Tips – On a sunny day it would be easy to pray here, in a quiet corner of the gardens. On a rainy day, I would struggle to find a suitable prayer spot. Make sure to pick up the free guide full of useful tips for rose care for the coming year.
